Police in rural Texas responded to a 911 call late on a Monday night after a father reported his six-week-old daughter had stopped breathing. When officers and paramedics arrived at the home outside Amarillo, they found the infant limp and pale. She was rushed to a nearby hospital where blood tests revealed a significant amount of methamphetamine circulating through her tiny system.

Detectives questioned the mother at the scene while the baby remained in intensive care. She admitted to using the drug earlier that evening and claimed she had no idea how it could have reached the child. Officers noted visible drug paraphernalia in the living room and an open bag of the substance on the kitchen counter. Within an hour of the discovery, the woman was placed under arrest and charged with injury to a child.

Hospital staff said the infant’s condition stabilized after treatment, though doctors expressed concern about possible long-term effects from the exposure. The father told investigators he had been at work and returned to find his daughter unresponsive in her crib. Neighbors described the couple as quiet but noted occasional late-night arguments that could be heard from the street.

The mother remained in custody as of Tuesday morning with bail set at $250,000. Child protective services took custody of the baby once she was medically cleared. Similar cases in the region have led to lengthy prison sentences when substances are found directly in an infant’s bloodstream.
