The Eerie Figure Watching Patients From a Hospital Roof Has Been Caught

A bizarre stunt at a Welsh hospital ended with a man facing a fine after he climbed onto the roof wearing a dark costume and carrying what appeared to be a large scythe while watching people below.

Leon Gillespie, 26, was fined $269 (£200) after scaling the Ysbyty Glan Clwyd hospital in Wales on June 6, according to the North Wales Pioneer. The unusual incident reportedly lasted nearly an hour and prompted concern among people at the medical facility.

Gillespie was dressed in a black hooded outfit and carried a long-bladed object as he remained on top of the hospital building for approximately 50 minutes. Witnesses also reported that he made noises toward people on the ground while standing on the roof.

The imagery quickly gave the impression of the Grim Reaper, the legendary figure associated with death who is traditionally depicted wearing a hood and carrying a curved blade.

Gillespie later disputed that interpretation in court.

During proceedings, he maintained that his outfit was intended to represent a bird rather than the Grim Reaper. Despite his explanation, authorities charged him with causing a nuisance or disturbance without reasonable justification on National Health Service property.

Gillespie eventually came down from the building and appeared before a court on July 15, where he admitted the nuisance-related offense.

The hospital incident was not the only matter addressed during the proceedings.

Court officials also heard that Gillespie had previously been involved in two shoplifting incidents. In March, he reportedly stole cat food and litter valued at roughly $50 (£37) from a pet shop in Llandudno.

Two months later, he was accused of taking merchandise from a Sainsbury’s supermarket in the same town.

Those offenses resulted in an additional financial penalty of approximately $336 (£250).

The Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, which oversees Ysbyty Glan Clwyd and is the largest health board in Wales, emphasized that disruptive behavior will not be tolerated at its medical facilities.

The organization said it maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward conduct involving abuse, aggression or nuisance on hospital property.

North Wales Police said Gillespie’s offense involved creating a disturbance affecting an NHS employee who was working at the site or was otherwise present for work-related reasons. Authorities also said he refused to leave the premises when instructed to do so by a police officer.

While Gillespie insisted that his unusual appearance was meant to portray a bird, his rooftop behavior created an unsettling scene at a location where patients and medical professionals were already dealing with serious circumstances.

The case serves as an unusual reminder that what may be intended as a stunt or costume display can quickly become a police matter when it takes place on hospital grounds and disrupts staff, patients or visitors.
