Facebook Post Just Got Woman Arrested Photo

A woman in suburban Chicago found herself facing charges after a single Facebook post backfired in spectacular fashion. Authorities say 29-year-old Melissa Torres uploaded a photo on May 7 that showed her holding a large bundle of cash alongside several items reported stolen from a nearby electronics store two days earlier. Detectives monitoring social media for leads on the theft spotted the image almost immediately.

Officers obtained a warrant and arrested Torres at her apartment the following morning. She had apparently used the platform to brag about the score to friends, complete with captions that referenced the store by name. Police recovered some of the merchandise from her bedroom, along with the cash visible in the picture. Torres now faces felony theft and possession of stolen property counts.

The post itself did most of the work for investigators. It included both a timestamp and location data that placed her near the store on the night of the break-in. Friends who commented on the photo also helped fill in details, according to the police report. What started as an attempt to show off quickly turned into a trail of evidence that was hard to ignore.

Local prosecutors noted that cases built on social media evidence have become more common, though they rarely involve such an obvious self-incrimination. Torres is scheduled to appear in court later this month. If convicted, she could face several years in prison, depending on the total value of the stolen goods.
