Shark Attack Ends Saving Mans Life
In a bizarre turn on a Florida beach last week, a shark attack did more than draw blood. It interrupted what authorities say was a robbery attempt and gave one man his life back. The incident unfolded near Jacksonville on September 8 when 34-year-old local resident Mark Ellison was confronted by an armed man demanding cash and his phone. Ellison ran into the surf to escape. Moments later a roughly eight-foot bull shark struck the attacker instead.
Witnesses described chaos as the would-be robber thrashed and screamed before struggling back to shore. Ellison, unharmed by the shark, made it to safety and flagged down beach patrol. Police arrived to find the injured suspect still on the sand. He was taken into custody on robbery and weapons charges after treatment for severe leg wounds. Ellison told officers the man had followed him from a nearby parking lot and pulled a knife before the chase began.
Investigators said the attack may have prevented a worse outcome. The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Derek Harlan from out of state, had prior theft convictions. Ellison, who works at a local marina, later described the whole thing as something he still could not quite believe. “I went in the water to get away and that shark basically did the rest,” he said.
Marine experts noted bull sharks are known to hunt in shallow coastal waters this time of year, though attacks on people remain rare. The episode left both men with lasting reminders—one with bite marks and legal trouble, the other with a story that will probably follow him for years. Local lifeguards have since increased patrols in the area.
