Fishermen Find Unnerving Surprise Inside Shark

Fishermen off the coast of Florida pulled a 12-foot tiger shark from the water on May 5 and got a jolt they still talk about days later. The crew had planned a routine outing, but once they got the fish on deck and made the first cut along its belly, something pale and unexpected tumbled out onto the deck boards.

It turned out to be a human arm, severed cleanly above the elbow and still wearing a diver’s watch that had stopped at 3:17. One of the men later said the sight stopped everyone cold for a full minute. They radioed the Coast Guard right away and kept the shark iced until officers arrived to collect the remains.

Marine biologists who examined the fish later noted that tiger sharks often swallow whatever fits, including trash and the occasional unlucky swimmer. In this case the arm showed clear bite marks that matched the shark’s teeth, suggesting the diver had already been in trouble before the animal found him. Police checked local missing-persons reports but had no immediate match.

The watch itself offered the only real clue so far. Its brand and serial number pointed to a model sold mostly to technical divers, narrowing the search to a handful of charter companies that operate farther offshore. The fishermen, meanwhile, have said they plan to keep working the same waters, though none of them expect to forget the moment the arm slid free.
