Aclu Leader Resigns Over Controversial Facebook Post About Donald Trump

An ACLU official in New York resigned over the weekend following backlash to a Facebook post that took aim at Donald Trump. The post, which surfaced earlier in the week, questioned whether the Republican front-runner should be allowed to hold rallies and suggested his events posed a direct threat that warranted stronger pushback from authorities.

The comment quickly circulated among conservative outlets and drew complaints to the organization. ACLU leadership said the remarks went against the group’s long-standing defense of free speech, even for figures whose views it opposes. The official, who had worked with the group for several years, issued a brief statement acknowledging the post had created an “untenable” situation and chose to step away rather than fight the matter internally.

Trump’s campaign seized on the episode as further proof that critics on the left were willing to stretch rules when it came to his supporters. A spokesman called the original post “typical” of what he described as efforts to silence voters who back the candidate. At the same time, some civil liberties advocates outside the ACLU expressed disappointment that the organization appeared to distance itself so quickly from one of its own.

The incident comes as Trump continues to draw large crowds at campaign stops across the country, with opponents often organizing protests nearby. It also highlights the tricky spot groups like the ACLU find themselves in during a heated election cycle, where defending speech rights for unpopular speakers can clash with internal sentiment.
