Man Taking Selfies Gun Fatally Shoots Himself

Ruth Kamau  ·  April 11, 2016

A man in his late 20s accidentally killed himself while snapping selfies with a loaded handgun, according to police reports from early April. The incident unfolded when the man tried to capture a series of photos showing off the weapon, but he ended up pulling the trigger instead. Officers arrived to find him dead at the scene with the gun nearby and a phone still unlocked on the floor.

Witnesses told investigators the man had been posing in front of a mirror, adjusting angles and checking the shots on his screen. At some point during the process he must have had his finger on the trigger. One shot rang out, and that was it. No one else was hurt, though the sudden noise sent neighbors rushing outside.

Police confirmed there were no signs of foul play or anyone else involved. The gun belonged to the man, and he had posted similar photos online before, often showing firearms in casual settings. Detectives collected the phone and other items as evidence but said the case appeared straightforward from the start.

These kinds of accidents keep happening with people treating guns like props for social media. In this case the outcome was final, leaving family members to deal with the aftermath of what started as a few quick pictures. Local authorities released few additional details beyond the basic facts.
