Police Officer Shatters Womans Window During Stop Doesnt Realize Mistake

A traffic stop in suburban Ohio turned tense on October 24 when an officer smashed the driver’s side window of a woman’s car, only to discover moments later that he had targeted the wrong vehicle entirely. The incident began after a report of a possible stolen car matching a similar make and color. Body camera footage later showed the officer approaching the sedan, ordering the driver out, and growing impatient when she asked why she was being pulled over.

Without waiting for backup or further confirmation, he used his baton to shatter the glass. The woman, who was uninjured but shaken, had her hands raised throughout. She later told investigators she had simply been confused about the sudden command to exit the vehicle during what she thought was an ordinary stop for a taillight.

Once the window was broken, the officer reached inside to unlock the door and quickly realized the license plate did not match the one listed in the alert. The actual suspect had already been detained two blocks away by another unit. Dispatch records confirm the mix-up happened because the initial call gave only a partial plate number.

The woman was released without charges. Police officials said the officer would face an internal review, though they noted he had been cleared of any criminal wrongdoing. The episode drew quick attention online after the video was released, with many questioning why the window had to be broken at all when the driver showed no signs of aggression.
