Located in Independent City, Virginia, Alexandria was founded in 1749. Alexandria's Gadsby's Tavern hosted both George Washington's birthday celebrations and meetings that helped plan the new federal city. The Torpedo Factory Art Center, now one of the nation's largest collections of artist studios, was an actual torpedo manufacturing plant during World War II.
