College Student Gives Birth and Hides Baby Plastic Bag

A college student in the Midwest gave birth alone in her off-campus apartment and then placed the newborn inside a plastic bag, according to police reports filed this week. The infant was later discovered by maintenance workers responding to a complaint about a foul odor coming from a storage closet. Officers said the baby appeared to have been left there for several days before anyone noticed.

The student, identified only as a 20-year-old sophomore at a local university, was taken into custody on charges of child endangerment and concealment of a birth. Detectives told reporters she had hidden the pregnancy from roommates and family, continuing to attend classes right up until the delivery. No one close to her had any idea she was expecting.

Court documents released Friday described a frantic effort to clean up after the birth, including attempts to dispose of evidence in nearby dumpsters. The baby survived the ordeal and was placed in the care of child protective services. Medical staff noted the child was full term and appeared otherwise healthy despite the circumstances.

Neighbors expressed shock when they learned what had happened in the quiet apartment complex. One resident said the young woman had always kept to herself and never mentioned any personal struggles. Local authorities are still piecing together how she managed to conceal everything for so long without drawing attention.

Cases like this tend to stir uneasy questions about the pressure some students face when dealing with unplanned pregnancies in silence. The university has not commented beyond confirming the student is no longer enrolled, while investigators continue to review statements from friends and faculty.
