Waitress Shocked See why Customers Wrote Lol Tip Line Receipt Photo

A waitress at a casual dining spot outside Philadelphia got an unwelcome surprise last week when she picked up the check from a table of four. Instead of a dollar amount in the tip line, the customers had written “LOL” in big letters. The photo she snapped of the receipt quickly made the rounds online, showing a $68 bill with nothing added on top.

She told coworkers she stared at the slip for a minute, thinking maybe it was a joke that would be fixed at the register. It wasn’t. The group had already left, and the only message was that single word. Tips made up most of her income that summer, so the empty line hit hard.

The image spread on social media within hours. Some people defended the customers, saying the service must have been bad enough to warrant the dig. Others pointed out that stiffing a server and then mocking them on the receipt crossed a line most diners wouldn’t touch. The waitress said she wasn’t looking for sympathy, just wanted others in the industry to see it wasn’t an isolated case.

Tipping culture in restaurants has always been uneven, and stories like this one pop up every few months. What stood out here was how casual the insult felt, like the table treated it as harmless fun rather than a direct hit to someone’s paycheck. The restaurant manager said they couldn’t do much after the fact, but they did keep the photo on file in case the group returned.

For the waitress, the episode was a reminder that not every shift ends with a decent gratuity. She went back to work the next day anyway, though she admitted she checked every receipt a little more carefully after that.
