Missing Wolferts Sisters Found After Year

Ruth Kamau  ·  June 13, 2015

The two Wolferts sisters who disappeared from their home last June have been found alive after more than a year on the run. Authorities located them in a small apartment outside of Reno on Tuesday, bringing an end to a case that had drawn local attention but few solid leads. Both young women appeared in good health, though police have not released many details about where they had been living or what prompted their return.

Their mother filed the missing persons report in early summer of 2014 after the girls, ages 17 and 19 at the time, failed to come home from a weekend visit with friends. Searches turned up nothing, and tips about possible sightings never panned out. Some neighbors suspected the sisters had left on their own, while others worried about foul play. The family kept pushing for coverage, posting flyers and speaking to reporters whenever they could.

Investigators said the breakthrough came from an anonymous tip that pointed them to the Nevada address. Officers found the sisters together, with no signs of restraint or injury. They were taken in for questioning but released the same day after speaking with their parents by phone. The family has not commented publicly yet, though one relative told a local station they were simply relieved to know the girls were okay.

What remains unclear is why the sisters stayed away for so long or whether anyone else was involved in helping them. Detectives are still reviewing phone records and bank activity from the past year, but they have not filed charges against anyone at this point. Friends of the family described the reunion as quiet, with no big public statements planned.

For now, the focus seems to be on letting the Wolferts get back to normal life. The case file stays open while police sort through the remaining questions.
