Poll Wide Majority Trump Supporters Would Vote Him Even if he Ran

A new poll out this week found that Donald Trump’s backers were remarkably loyal, with most saying they would stick with him even if he decided to run outside the Republican Party. The survey, conducted by a national polling firm, showed that roughly two-thirds of those who favored the real estate mogul said they would back him as an independent candidate. That level of commitment stood out at a time when Trump was still testing the waters for a possible presidential bid.

The results came as Trump continued to float the idea of jumping into the 2016 race. His blunt style had already drawn crowds at early events, and the poll suggested his appeal went beyond standard party lines for a chunk of voters. Many of those supporters described themselves as frustrated with both parties, which may explain why they were willing to follow him wherever he went.

Still, the numbers carried some caveats. While the majority said they would stay with Trump, the rest indicated they would return to the GOP fold or simply stay home. That split highlighted how much of his support depended on him staying in the Republican primary process rather than breaking away on his own.

Republican strategists have long worried about independent runs splitting the vote, and this poll gave them fresh reason to pay attention. Trump had not yet filed paperwork or made a formal announcement, but the data showed his supporters were already prepared to go the distance if he chose a different path.
