Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is once again under scrutiny after new federal campaign finance records revealed tens of thousands of dollars in campaign spending on luxury travel, upscale dining and high-end venues — including a pricey stay in Puerto Rico that coincided with a viral moment showing the New York Democrat dancing at a Bad Bunny concert.

According to third-quarter filings with the Federal Election Commission, Ocasio-Cortez’s principal campaign committee spent close to $50,000 on hotels, meals and venue rentals tied to Puerto Rico between July and September. The disclosures are raising eyebrows, particularly given the congresswoman’s frequent public denunciations of wealth inequality and gentrification on the island.

Campaign records show that on multiple occasions, the Ocasio-Cortez campaign booked rooms at some of San Juan’s most exclusive properties. Among them was the Hotel Palacio Provincial, a luxury, adults-only hotel housed in a restored 19th-century building that markets itself as a “first-class” experience steeped in colonial-era elegance. Filings list several payments to the hotel, including one expense approaching $10,000 in late September.

Additional records indicate the campaign also paid thousands more to stay at Hotel El Convento, another historic and upscale property known for its old-world charm. Altogether, lodging expenses in Puerto Rico alone totaled more than $15,000 during the three-month reporting period.

But the spending didn’t stop there. Campaign disclosures also show more than $10,000 spent on meals and catering services on the island, further adding to the overall tab. The timing of some of those expenses overlapped with Ocasio-Cortez’s appearance at an August Bad Bunny concert in San Juan, where she was filmed dancing alongside fellow New York Democrat Rep. Nydia Velázquez.

The concert, part of the rapper’s high-profile residency tour, drew a celebrity-packed crowd that included NBA star LeBron James and Hollywood actors Penélope Cruz and Austin Butler. Campaign filings also list more than $23,000 spent on venue rentals at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico, the same arena where the concert was held, though it remains unclear whether those costs were directly tied to the music event.

Fox News was first to report on the spending, prompting a response from Ocasio-Cortez campaign manager Oliver Hidalgo-Wohlleben. In a statement, he defended the expenses, saying the congresswoman frequently travels to Puerto Rico to support local initiatives and host events that require staff coordination and security.

“She is proud to invest in grassroots organizing,” Hidalgo-Wohlleben said, adding that Ocasio-Cortez remains committed to advocating for Puerto Ricans both on the island and across the mainland.

Still, critics note that the Puerto Rico expenditures were just part of a broader pattern of high-dollar campaign spending. During the same quarter, Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign paid for stays at boutique hotels across the country, including thousands of dollars at the Hotel Vermont in Burlington during stops on her “Fighting Oligarchy” tour with Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Other lodging expenses included a luxury stay near Central Park in Manhattan and another high-end hotel booking in Brooklyn. The filings also reveal significant spending on upscale dining, including thousands of dollars at restaurants in Washington, D.C., New York and Vermont — and even a notable tab at an ice cream vendor.

For critics, the disclosures highlight what they see as a disconnect between Ocasio-Cortez’s progressive rhetoric and her campaign’s spending habits. Supporters, meanwhile, argue that such costs are routine for a high-profile lawmaker with a national following.

As campaign finance reports continue to roll in, Ocasio-Cortez’s use of donor funds is likely to remain a flashpoint — especially as she continues to position herself as a leading voice against elites and excess in American politics.
