Kent, England – Back in March 2015, a silverback gorilla named Ambam turned heads at the Port Lympne Wild Animal Park when he started walking around on two legs like he was out for a casual stroll.

Visitors couldn’t believe their eyes as Ambam, a massive western lowland gorilla, covered ground upright for several meters at a time. He wasn’t just shuffling; he moved with a surprising grace, almost mimicking how people walk, which caught everyone off guard. Park staff had seen him do this before, but a video of the moment spread quickly online, drawing in animal lovers from around the world.

That clip showed Ambam plodding along a path, his arms swinging lightly, as if he was just another park-goer enjoying the day. People watching it online shared laughs and amazement, with comments flooding in about how human-like he seemed. It was a fun reminder of the quirky ways animals can surprise us, and for a brief moment, Ambam became an internet star.

Experts at the park noted that while gorillas sometimes stand up to reach for food or intimidate rivals, sustained two-legged walking is pretty unusual. Ambam, who was around 20 years old at the time, might have picked up the habit through observation or just his own personality. It’s moments like these that make a trip to the zoo more than just a day out; they spark curiosity about the wild behaviors we don’t often see. All in all, saying hello to Ambam that day left folks with a smile and a story to tell.
