The City of Florence was chartered in 1871 by the Reconstruction government and incorporated in 1890 following the 1888 creation of Florence County.

Florence also has a budding theater scene, starting with creating the Community Players in 1923.

Florence's Post 1 American Legion baseball team is one of the longest tenured teams in the state, beginning in 1932.
1948History
The minor league Florence Steelers played in Florence from 1948 to 1950.
1965History
In 1965, Florence was named an All-American City, presented by the National Civic League.
1968Architecture
In 1968 the first Florence Little Theater was built, but in 2008, they built a new Florence Little Theater due to a need for more space where it is still being used.
1974Government
The authority was established in June 1974; it is South Carolina's oldest and largest RTA.
1981Sports
The Toronto Blue Jays had a minor league team that played in Florence from 1981 to 1986.
1998Infrastructure
Relocated to Florence in 1998, the team brings in players from collegiate sports conferences, including the Southeastern Conference and the Atlantic Coast Conference.
